The Charleston Light Opera Guild Presents “EVITA” – May 17th &18th

The greatest collaboration of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and Lyricist Time Rice. Evita tells the story of Eva Peron, perhaps the most notorious public figure in Argentina’s history, rose from poverty to a career as a performer and then climbed to prominence as the wife of dictator Juan Peron and Argentina’s First Lady.  Eva was beloved by the people and despised by the military and
aristocracy.  Her story comes to life through a compelling score that merges chorales with exciting Latin, pop and jazz influences and a storyteller named Che who challenges Eva’s motives. 72nd Strawberry Festival – May 15th-19th

Each year the Strawberry Festival is held in Buckhannon, WV.  And each year, the Strawberry Festival combines exciting family traditions with street parties, 4 major parades, a carnival and on-going entertainment!  Devour the chocolate covered strawberries & strawberry shortcake found on every corner, browse the juried art show and photography exhibit, enter Strawberry Idol and take pleasure in Buckhannon’s small town charm!Continuing this year will be the Horse and Carriage Parade, featuring 50+ horse-drawn carriages traveling along Strawberry Lane!  Featuring a ’Cinderella’ style carriage, miniature horses, and other unique displays, .  Before and after the Parade, be sure to take a Horse & Carriage Ride through the streets of the Downtown Buckhannon Historic District!!!!!

Back to the Park – Saturday May18th

Families are encouraged to get “Back to The Park” by stopping by the Dunbar Wine Cellar Park on Saturday, May 18 for the “National Kids Back to The Park Day” celebration. The event will be held from 10:00am- 2:00pm.Activities include a fishing tournament, archery, Frisbee games, bike safety instruction, a meet and greet with real life rescue dogs and more fun for kids. Manna Meal!!!!!!!!

Manna Meal serves Breakfast to those in need every day of the year, is in serious need of cereal donations!!!! If you can help please drop off donated boxes to Manna Meal’s door located in at St John’s Episcopal Church from 7:00am-2:00pm. Art Contest to Celebrate West Virginia’s 150th Birthday – Now – May 15th

West Virginia is OLD—older than grandma, grandpa or anyone else you know…….but getting better with age. If you’re in kindergarten through 12th grade, you are eligible to enter a statewide art contest to celebrate West Virginia’s 150th birthday. Children in grades K-5 will create a birthday card for West Virginia’s special celebration. Students in grades 6-8 and 9-12 can create videos by themselves or in teams of two. Videos must not be longer than two minutes.Themes for the videos are “Happy 150th Birthday West Virginia – What Makes West Virginia Unique” and “What makes West Virginia special?” Students should wish West Virginia a happy 150th birthday within the videos.Prizes include Kindles and gift cards and will be awarded in each age group. Winning artwork may also be showcased in the rotunda during the West Virginia 150th birthday celebration at the State Capitol. There is no entry fee and artwork may be submitted between April 1 and May 15, 2013. Each artwork or video must have an official application. Applications are available online at www.wvcommerce.org/art150.

A Great Cause & Some Great Food – Support Autism With Buffalo Wild Wings Nitro – May 15th

All friends, families and supporters are invited to participate in a fundraising event on Wednesday May 15, 2013. Everyone is invited to gather at Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner or place a carryout order. On this day, 15% of all food purchases accompanied by the certificate will be donated to the Applied Behavior Learning Center for Autism. Click here to print certificate. The mission of Applied Behavior Learning Center (ABLC) is to educate children with autism and related disorders so that they may one day be mainstreamed into a regular education classroom. Utilizing the principles developed by Ivar Lovaas, ABLC will provide one-on-one Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy or ABA.

Reunion Kits-  May 24th –  September 2nd

The West Virginia Department of Commerce is again offering reunion kits for people coming home to the Mountain State in 2013. Perfect for reunion planners, the kits welcome people to West Virginia by providing everything needed to celebrate this important birthday, including postcards, state highway maps, travel guides and goodie bags.The state celebrates its sesquicentennial birthday on June 20, and West Virginians reuniting with friends, family and former classmates can take part all summer long by downloading birthday fliers or banners at www.wvcommerce.org/reunions. This year, the kits will include a 150th Birthday T-shirt and three 150th Birthday hats to offer as reunion door prizes. Additional birthday memorabilia can be purchased at www.wv150.com. Event coordinators may request reunion kits by visiting www.wvcommerce.org/reunions or calling 304.957.9332 or 304.957.9363. A completed official application form may be submitted online at www.wvcommerce.org/reunions or downloaded and mailed to Department of Commerce, 2013 Reunions, 90 MacCorkle Ave. SW, South Charleston, WV 25303.The promotion period runs from Memorial Day until Labor Day, or while supplies last. First come, first served. Only school, family or community reunions are eligible, and the reunion must take place in West Virginia!!!!!
