Stats as to why the Swine Flu panic is a joke!

ist2_9333680-swine-flu-panicSo I feel as tho this has gotten way outta hand! Here are some stats to prove it and to ease your worries.

This map show just “Flu symptoms”. ALL flu types. So my point is that there is no need to worry about just the Swine Flu.

Over 36,000 people die each year from the regular flu strands. Only 17,000 have been hospitalized since the discovery of the Swine Flu in America. And of those 1,468 have past away.

So my final thought… PARENTS! LET YOUR KIDS GO TO SCHOOL! AND SCHOOLS, DON’T CLOSE YOUR DOORS!

Ahhh… I feel better. hahaha

Also, here is the state of West Virginia’s Flu website. Full of great information. http://www.wvflu.org/

Here is a cool chart I found that is accurate to October 5, 2009.

all illnesses scare me as a parent but i don’t go overboard when someone else is sick. people use the swine flu as an excuse for whatever it is they don’t want to do. i will get my kids the swine flu vaccine if they want it and a flu shot if they want. i get a yearly flu shot.
i did hear something interesting on the news last night. they said older adults (elderly) shouldn’t get the swine flu vaccine because they had probably already been exposed to a variation of the virus when they were younger and it would cause problems. obviously swine flu has spread before, just no one got excited because they didn’t have the news talking about it all the time.

there has been deaths in WV……

So Dr. Nick, I listened to your little rant today about the flu. My opinion, and no I’m not a Doctor either, is that if you have a temp and know you have the flu stay HOME. WV is the has the most unhealthy people, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetis, if they get the flu it could be deadly. The US, by being overly cautious, has stopped any kind of flu from being a big problem like it is in other countries. A few days of missing school verses a whole community being sick? Which should we choose? I am so glad the numbers are low, hopefully we can keep it that way.

I too think that all the media attention is a little over board! Yes the swine flu can be life threating but is very treatable if caught soon enough. Most of the people who have died from it has had previous or other conditions involved. I have never given any of my 3 children the flu shot and probably will not start now. And regarding the N1H1 shot, I dont feel that it has been around long enough to really know what the side effects and long term problems might be for giving it. I don’t trust it enough to inject it into my children. Wash your hands, dont eat and drink after other people and just take normal precautions. Get a grip!

  5. WV Nurse says:

So, according to Dr. Harry Tweel, MD, the director of the Cabell Huntington Health Department, has released an offical statement to WSAZ about the CMHS death. “Saturday night, Dr. Harry Tweel, director of the Cabell-Huntington Health Department, told WSAZ.com that a person had died at a Huntington hospital of a possible case of swine flu.

Tweel says that the H1N1 virus had not yet been confirmed in the patient, and that tests were still waiting to be confirmed.” (http://www.wsaz.com/news/headlines/63458407.html)

As for the latest up to date info, the CDC reports Regional statistics: with 11 reported pediatric deaths. (http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/)

the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health (BPH) Division of Surveillance and Disease Control’s Infectious Disease Epidemiology Program (IDEP)has just released its update # 25. Please educate yourself on the new updates. (http://www.wvidep.org/)

I agree that the H1N1 is no more serious than Influenza A and yes, as the previous caller stated, H1N1 vaccines have shown Guillain-Barré syndrome, but in England. I PERSONALLY feel that the CDC needs to futher investigate. I dont see how the FDA can rapidly approve a vaccine that has to go through so many clinical trials for other medications. I too, are required to take the flu vaccine AND Swine flu at my hospital. if not, you are immediatly dismissed. with these companies requring employees take this vaccine be required to pay for the medical costs associated with any Guillain-Barré syndrome Diagnosis?

    What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome? (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/gbs/gbs.htm)

everyone must practice “Standard Precautions” , ie, frequently washing hands, covering your cough, etc. I dont see what all the FRENZIE is about. H1N1 is only a FLU A STRAIN!

Take precautions, wash often, and read the posts! Education is key!

    nick,
there was a 14 year old boy that died from the swine flu at my school, which is cabell midland high school…the swine flu isnt a joke really…my friends have siblings who have it…seriously…

  7. Kari says:

Did you ever consider that if everyone kept their kids home when they show signs of the flu (AS YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO) then it could be better controlled and the death rate would go down? Then schools would not have to close because parents would be doing their job and taking care of their children. The school is there to teach your children not to be replacement parents while you work! You still have to provide basic parenting skills such as determining the proper health of your child. You make it seem as though the death rate for swine flu is so much lower than other flues, but you failed to mention that the swine flu was only introduced into the US April of 2009! I would also like to know where you got the chart posted because I did not find that information on the site you referenced.
